The third game in the Dragon Quest series, originally released in 1988 for the Famicom and later brought to North America (as Dragon Warrior III) in 1991. Enhanced remakes have since been made for the Super Famicom and Game Boy Color, though only the latter was released outside of Japan.
This game was the first to include a gender option for the main player-character. It also introduced character classes to the series: soldier, priest, mage, fighter, merchant, jester, and sage. The Super Famicom remake introduced an additional thief class.
It is a prequel to the original game, with the protagonist eventually revealed as the legendary hero of whom DQ1's main character is a descendant. This is not made apparent to the player until roughly the last third of the game, which is set in a historical version of the DQ1 world.
